A Study on the Development of Human Small Intestinal Wall

Abstract
The small intestinal walls of human embryos and fetuses aging from 5 to 40 weeks were studied to observe the development of the small intestinal mucosa and the time of appearance of the external muscle layer and muscularis mucosae. The results were as follows; 1. The epithelial cell of the primitive intestinal mucosa showed mitotic figures in the embroyo of 5 week of age. On the ninth week, age. On the ninth week, the intestinal epithelium is the tall simple columnar and the intestinal villi appeared as small rounded elevation. 2. The intestinal glands arised from the invagination of the small intestinal epithelium and on the twentieth week, intestinal glands were found in the lamina propria. 3. The goblet cell was identified in the fetus of 11 week of age and thereafter, increased in number. On the twentieth week, the lymphatic nodule was present in the lamina propria. 4. The inner circular muscle layer appeared on the seventh week, and that of the outer longitudinal muscle layer on the ninth week. The muscularis mucosae was noticed on the eighteenth week.
